I am very grateful to have been given the trust and honour of designing merchandise for All Women’s Action Society Malaysia. I’ve long admired their work, and was super happy to work with them to produce some illustrated merchandise designs for their campaigns.
There were two projects that I worked on simultaneously; one was about the importance of consent, and the other was about de-stigmatising menstruation among young people. According to their requests, I produced one button badge design, two sticker sheets, a postcard, and a bookmark.
The first thing I came up with was the button badge design. They requested something with a cat, and I was excited to deliver.
The second deliverable, and my favourite, were the sticker sheets. The first, titled “AWAM’s Consent Club,” includes retro-themed illustrations and typography about the importance of seeking enthusiastic consent in relationships.
The second sticker sheet, titled “Haid, Jangan Hide,” is a more gentle and soft approach to self-love and acceptance of menstruation.
Next up we have the postcard design. I would say this was the most challenging item out of all the deliverables, as it relied heavily on my illustration capabilities. We wanted to incorporate as much inclusivity as possible with the characters, as well as traditional batik patterns and flora that represents femininity.
And, finally, the bookmark design, which was rather fun to conceptualise.
I am immensely grateful to the AWAM team for their patience with me as I completed this work while simultaneously studying abroad. It was such a fun project and I hope to work with them again sometime!
